Electrical Fault Finding in Liverpool

Most call-outs are a fault diagnosis job first. Work through this before you call.

Fault finding is the work of locating the fault. It comes before any repair. We charge one hourly rate for both, so there is no separate fault finding fee.

Almost every fault we see in Liverpool falls into one of four patterns. Knowing which one you have tells you how urgent it is.

First, is it just your property?

Your House Only

If your neighbours have power but you do not, the electrical fault is inside your property. That is a fault finding job, and it is our territory.

  • Tripped RCD or fuse. Try resetting at the fuse box.
  • Faulty appliance. Unplug everything and reset.
  • Prepayment meter empty. Check and top up credit.
  • Main fuse blown. Call us immediately.
  • Loose connection. Call us to locate and fix.
Call 07399 676656

Whole Street or Area

This is a network fault, not a problem with your property. You do not need an electrician. Merseyside is covered by SP Energy Networks.

Then try this. It clears around 40% of faults.

1
Check Your Fuse Box

Look for the main switch labelled RCD, RCBO or Main Switch. Usually found under the stairs, in a hallway cupboard, or in the garage.

2
Reset Your System

Turn OFF all switches including the main RCD. Then turn ON the RCD first. Finally turn each circuit on one by one.

3
Identify the Faulty Circuit

This is basic fault finding. If one circuit keeps tripping, unplug everything on it. Try resetting. Plug items back one at a time to find the faulty appliance. Still stuck? Read our full troubleshooting guide for no power to sockets.

If you smell burning or see sparks at any point, stop immediately and call us on 07399 676656. For guidance on electrical safety in the home, visit Electrical Safety First.

Still not right? Find your fault pattern

It trips the moment you reset it

Something on that circuit is faulting to earth. Unplug everything on the circuit. Try the reset once more. If it still will not hold, leave it off and call us.

Urgent

It trips now and then

Intermittent power tripping is usually an appliance. Immersion heaters, washing machines and electric showers are the common culprits. Note what was running each time. That narrows it fast.

Same day

A dead socket, nothing tripped

One socket or one room is out. The fuse box looks normal. This is usually a loose connection in the ring. Loose connections heat up over time, so faulty socket repair is not a job to leave.

Same day

A burning smell or a warm socket

Nothing has tripped, but something smells hot or feels warm. That is arcing. It is the most dangerous of the four. Turn the power off and call us now.

Fault finding questions

My fuse box keeps tripping and will not reset. What should I do?

Work through the three steps above to find the circuit at fault. If the board still will not reset with every circuit switched off, the fault is in the board itself or the incoming supply. Leave the power off and call us on 07399 676656.

Half my house has no power. Is that an emergency?

It is urgent rather than dangerous, unless you also smell burning. One dead circuit usually means a tripped MCB or a faulty appliance. If a reset does not hold, call us the same day.

How long does electrical fault finding take?

Most faults are traced in 45 to 90 minutes. Complete power loss takes 60 to 120 minutes. We carry common parts on the van, so 95 percent of jobs are finished on the first visit.

Do you charge extra to find the fault?

No. Fault diagnosis is charged at the same hourly rate as the repair. Weekday is £80 per hour. Weekend morning is £120 per hour. Emergency Rate is £150 per hour. One hour minimum, then 30 minute increments.

Common Emergencies We Fix in Liverpool

What we get called out for most, with typical fault finding and fix times.

Complete Power Loss

Typical fix: 60 to 120 mins

Full property blackout. Could be a tripped main switch, failed RCD, or a fault on the supply. Electrical fault finding restores power fast.

Partial Power Loss

Typical fix: 45 to 90 mins

One room or circuit has gone down. Usually a tripped MCB or faulty appliance. Our guide to troubleshooting no power to sockets covers the most common causes. Our fault diagnosis isolates it and gets the circuit back safely.

RCD Keeps Tripping

Typical fix: 60 to 90 mins

A repeatedly tripping RCD means something is causing a fault. We identify what could be causing your RCD to trip, whether it is an appliance, damaged wiring or a failing RCD. Power tripping repair is one of our most common Liverpool callouts.

Burning Smell or Sparks

Typical fix: 60 to 120 mins

Turn off your main power and call us immediately. Burning smells and sparks are serious warning signs of arcing or overheating wiring.

Electric Shower Out

Typical fix: 45 to 75 mins

No power to the shower or tripping the circuit every time it is used. We carry common shower spare parts on the van for a same-visit fix.

Fuse Box Problems

Typical fix: 60 to 120 mins

Burning smell from the board, physical damage, or a main switch that will not reset. We assess whether it needs repair or a full consumer unit upgrade. See also fuseboard upgrade costs.

Michael fit us in at short notice when we our fuse switch socket started smoking. Communication was great, price was reasonable for an emergency call out. We were pleased with the work and would definitely use him again for other electrical jobs.

Emergency Electrician Questions

Straight answers about what Liverpool customers ask most.

24/7Do you actually answer calls at 3am?

Yes. A real person answers 24/7, not voicemail or an AI system. As a genuine 24 hour electrician Liverpool can rely on, Emergency Rate callouts get 30-minute guaranteed response, any time of day or night. Try calling us at 11pm, we will answer.

TONIGHTCan you come out tonight?

Yes. We operate 24/7 across Liverpool, 365 days a year. If you are on Emergency Rate, we guarantee a 30-minute arrival with a 22-minute average. Call 07399 676656 now and we will have an electrician at your door within the hour, even at 2am on a Sunday.

COSTHow much does an emergency electrician cost in Liverpool?

Our rates are tiered by urgency, not just time of day:

Weekday Rate £80/hour. Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Same-day appointment.

Weekend Rate £120/hour. Saturday and Sunday mornings, 9am to 1pm. Same-day.

Emergency Rate £150/hour. Drop-everything dispatch. 30-minute guaranteed response, any time.

All tiers have a 1-hour minimum charge, then 30-minute increments after that. Parts are charged separately at cost. Read our full guide on emergency electrician costs in Liverpool.

CALLOUTIs there a call-out fee?

No separate callout fee on top of the hourly rate. Our 1-hour minimum charge at the tier rate (£80, £120 or £150) covers travel, diagnosis and labour for that first hour. You are paying for time on the job, not for us showing up.

RESPONSEHow quickly can you arrive?

Emergency Rate callouts (£150/hour tier) are guaranteed within 30 minutes anywhere in Liverpool. Our actual average arrival time is 22 minutes. We have electricians positioned across the city so there is always someone nearby, day or night.

Weekday and Weekend Rate callouts are same-day appointments at a time that suits you.

FIXINGWhat if you cannot fix it in the first visit?

We fix 95% of emergencies on the first visit using parts carried on the van. If specialist parts are needed, we safely isolate the fault so the rest of your property is still usable, then return with the parts to complete the job at our standard rate. We never walk away leaving a property unsafe.

ACCESSDo I need to be home when you arrive?

Someone over 18 needs to be on site to let us in and confirm what the problem is. For rental properties, this is usually the tenant. If you are a landlord and cannot be present, arrange access through your tenant or letting agent. We will send you a written report after the visit with photos, diagnosis and costs.

INSURANCEWill my home insurance cover an emergency electrician?

Some home insurance policies include emergency callout cover, others do not. Check your policy documents for "home emergency" or "electrical emergency" cover. We can provide a full invoice with itemised parts and labour to submit to your insurer. We are not an approved contractor for specific insurers, so payment is taken at the time of visit and you claim back afterwards.

PRICINGDo you charge extra for the city centre?

No extra charges for any Liverpool area. The same rates apply whether you are in L1 city centre or L25 Woolton. The only additional charge would be parking if we cannot find a free space.

OLD HOMESCan you fix old Liverpool houses?

Yes, this is something we specialise in. We work right across Liverpool on Victorian and Edwardian homes, Georgian houses and 1960s builds including aluminium wiring. We bring them up to current 18th Edition BS 7671 standards.

SAFETYCan bad wiring cause a fire?

Yes. According to Electrical Safety First, faulty wiring causes around 20,000 UK house fires every year. Warning signs include frequent tripping, flickering lights, a burning smell without a clear source, warm sockets, and sparks when plugging in appliances. If you notice any of these, call us.

Emergency Electrician Liverpool: Why Response Time Matters

When you have a power cut at midnight or smell burning from a socket, the last thing you need is a two-hour wait or an answerphone. Whether you need a same day electrician for a daytime fault or an out of hours electrician overnight, the number is the same.

Most callouts begin with electrical fault finding. That covers power tripping repair, faulty socket repair and wiring fault detection. We charge the same hourly rate for finding the fault as for fixing it.

We also attend commercial premises. Shops, offices and units across the city are covered by our commercial electrician Liverpool service, out of hours as well as in.

We have local emergency electricians based across Liverpool so there is always someone close by. Whether you are in Anfield to the north, Aigburth to the south, or anywhere in between, we will reach you fast. As Liverpool's trusted electricians, all our engineers are registered with NICEIC. Not sure who to call? Read our guide on how to choose an electrician in Liverpool.

Liverpool Old Housing Stock: What You Need to Know

Liverpool has a large proportion of Victorian terraces, Georgian townhouses and 1960s builds, many of which have original or outdated wiring. The HSE guidance on electrical safety is clear that older installations must be inspected and maintained to prevent fire risk. If your property is over 25 years old and has never had an Electrical Installation Condition Report, it is worth booking one alongside any emergency callout. Not sure if yours needs it? Read how to tell if your house needs rewiring.

We understand the specific issues in Liverpool period properties including rewiring Victorian and Edwardian homes, and carry out same-day remedial work at fixed, agreed prices. All work is carried out to current BS 7671 18th Edition wiring regulations.
