Who Needs PAT Testing in Liverpool?

If you run a business, rent out property, or operate in a public space, you likely need PAT testing. While PAT testing is not a specific legal requirement, the law does require all electrical equipment to be safe. A PAT test is the standard way to prove it.

Landlords and Letting Agents

Meet your duty of care with annual appliance checks in HMOs, flats and rental homes. Required for HMO licensing compliance.

Offices and Commercial Spaces

Keep staff and visitors safe while meeting Health and Safety Executive guidelines. Required for commercial insurance policies.

Shops, Salons and Cafes

PAT testing helps you pass inspections, maintain your insurance and demonstrate a duty of care to customers and staff.

Construction and Industrial Sites

Tools, leads and site equipment must be regularly tested especially under CDM regulations. Typically every 3 months for site gear.

Mobile Businesses

DJs, hairdressers, food vans. If your equipment plugs into a socket it should be tested. We offer convenient drop-off testing for small kits.

Schools, Nurseries and Healthcare

Protect vulnerable users and stay audit ready. High-traffic equipment in these environments requires more frequent testing schedules.

Not sure if you need it? If your equipment plugs into a standard socket, it likely needs testing. Call us on 07399 676656 for free advice on your specific setup.

What Is PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing — commonly known as PAT testing — is the process of checking electrical appliances to confirm they are safe to use. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, employers and landlords must make sure appliances are safe for employees and tenants. A PAT test is the accepted method of demonstrating this.

PAT Testing Helps Prevent

Electric shocks
Fires from faulty wiring
Fines for non-compliance
Failed insurance claims

What Needs Testing?

Any appliance with a plug or flexible cable including:

Computers and monitors
Kettles and microwaves
Power tools
Extension leads
Hair dryers
Office equipment
Heaters and fans
Fridges and freezers
We also test:

Extension leads and adapters, and appliances with detachable power cords — both the cord and the appliance are tested separately.

What Does PAT Testing Involve?

We follow industry best practices and guidance from the IET and HSE. Every test includes the following checks.

1
Visual Inspection

Plugs, cables, casings and connections visually checked for damage, wear or defects before any electrical testing begins.

2
Earth Continuity Test

Confirms the earth path is intact on Class I appliances. A failed earth is one of the most common — and dangerous — faults found.

3
Insulation Resistance Test

Checks that the insulation between live parts and the outer casing is effective and has not degraded over time.

4
Polarity and Lead Testing

Verifies correct wiring polarity and tests power leads and extension cords for continuity and correct connections throughout.

5
Pass or Fail Labels Applied

Every item receives a clearly dated pass or fail label so you always know what has been tested and when it is due again.

6
Digital Certificate and Report

A full report listing every item tested, results and any remedial notes is emailed to you within 24 hours of testing.

We test at the correct voltage — 230V for surge-protected equipment — and handle Class I, Class II and Class III appliances correctly. Not all testers do this.

How Often Should Equipment Be Tested?

There is no single fixed rule. Recommended frequency depends on the type of equipment, where it is used, how often it is used, and any history of faults. As a general guide:

Environment Recommended Frequency
Construction sites Every 3 months
Industrial equipment Every 6 to 12 months
Offices and light commercial Every 12 to 24 months
HMOs and rental properties Annually recommended
Schools and healthcare Annually as minimum

We help you set a custom test schedule as part of our service. No guesswork needed.

What Records Will You Receive?

After every PAT test you receive a complete set of records ready for insurers, inspectors or licensing purposes.

Register of Items Tested Every appliance tested listed with unique identifier
Faulty Item Report Clear list of any items that failed testing
On-Site Repair Notes Details of any issues we fixed during the visit
Full Digital Certificate Emailed within 24 hours, accepted by insurers
All records in one place — ready for your next insurance renewal, HSE inspection or HMO licensing review.
