"

Old fuseboard failed the EICR. Tom replaced it with an RCBO board the same week. Certificate issued same day. Very professional and left everything clean and tidy.

"

British Gas quoted me £1,700. Ideal Electrical did it for £699 with the same NICEIC certificate. Wish I had found them sooner. Absolutely brilliant service.

"

Had the old wire fuses replaced with a modern board. The lads explained everything clearly, worked cleanly throughout and tidied up after themselves. No mess at all.

What Is a Dual RCD Board?

Two RCDs protecting groups of circuits. RCD stands for Residual Current Device — a safety switch that instantly cuts power if it detects electricity flowing where it should not, such as through a person during an electric shock.

How It's Wired

RCD 1
Downstairs Sockets Cooker / Hob Boiler Upstairs Lights
RCD 2
Upstairs Sockets Kitchen Sockets Shower Downstairs Lights

Advantages

  • Affordable at £699
  • Full RCD protection
  • Meets 18th Edition requirements
  • Surge protection included

Limitations

  • One trip = half the house loses power
  • Harder to identify which circuit has faulted
  • No arc fault detection

Best For

  • Budget-conscious homeowners
  • Buy-to-let landlords
  • Upgrading from old wire fuses
  • Where cost is the priority

What Is a Full RCBO Board?

RCBO stands for Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection. It combines RCD protection with overload protection in one device. A full RCBO board gives each circuit its own individual RCBO. If one trips, only that circuit goes off and everything else in the house stays on.

  • Anyone wanting peace of mind
Why we recommend RCBO:

The extra £125 is worth it. When your toaster trips you do not lose power to lighting, your home office or the kids' bedrooms. It is a small price for a much better experience.

ULTIMATE SAFETY · FROM £1,300

What Is an AFDD Board?

AFDDs detect dangerous electrical arcs that standard RCDs and RCBOs cannot see. An arc can burn at 6,000 degrees inside your wall without tripping a standard board. AFDDs monitor the electrical signature of current flow and detect the unique pattern of a dangerous arc, cutting power before a fire starts.

What Is Surge Protection?

Power surges are sudden spikes in voltage that travel through your electrical system. They can be caused by lightning strikes, grid switching by the electricity supplier, faulty equipment turning on and off, and power restoration after a cut.

A Surge Protection Device sits in your fuseboard and monitors incoming voltage. When it detects a spike it diverts the excess voltage safely to earth before it reaches your appliances. Think of it like a pressure relief valve that lets normal electricity through but blocks anything dangerous.

Included as standard:

All our fuseboard upgrades include surge protection at no extra cost. It is now required by 18th Edition wiring regulations.

Without Surge Protection, These Are at Risk

Computers and laptops
Boilers and heating systems

What We Inspect Before Your New Board

A fuseboard upgrade is notifiable work under Part P building regulations. We are required to inspect your existing electrical system before submitting notification to building control. This is why every upgrade includes a free NICEIC certificate — we have to do the testing anyway.

Earth Bonding Must meet current sizes for water and gas pipework
Bathroom Lighting Correct IP rating for each zone checked
Sockets and Switches Visual inspection for damage throughout
Downlights Fire hoods checked where required
Circuit Loading Designed for the expected load of each circuit
All Wiring Full visual and tested insulation resistance inspection

Upgrading Old Fuseboards: What to Expect

Important: If your fuseboard is 20 or more years old, your underlying electrical installation is at least this age. Different occupants over the years may have made alterations and there is no way of knowing how safe these are until we test them.

Why Modern Boards Are More Sensitive

RCDs and RCBOs are highly sensitive safety devices — which is great for protection, but it means they will not tolerate any defects in your existing electrical installation. Issues that went unnoticed with old wire fuses can cause instant tripping with a new board.

Good news:

Around 80% of upgrades complete without significant additional work. We are just being honest about what can sometimes happen. If we do find issues, we make the circuit safe, explain the problem clearly and provide a separate written quote for any repairs needed. We never leave you with an unsafe installation.

Common Issues We Find

DIY Alterations

Sockets or lights added incorrectly by previous owners or tenants

Aged Appliances

Older appliances developing earth leakage current as insulation degrades

Undersized Bonding

Earth bonding cables that no longer meet current regulation sizes

Loose Connections

Connections that have worked loose over years of use causing nuisance tripping

Signs You Need a New Fuseboard

See any of these? Your fuseboard likely will not pass an electrical safety certificate. Call us for a free assessment.

Burning Smell

Overheating from the board is a serious fire risk requiring immediate attention

Frequent Tripping

Circuits that trip regularly means the board cannot handle the electrical load

Flickering Lights

Lights that flicker or dim indicate poor connections at the board or on circuits

Wire Fuses

Rewirable fuses provide no RCD protection and will fail any EICR inspection

Exposed Holes

Open gaps in the consumer unit enclosure present a direct shock risk

No RCD Protection

A board without RCD protection will not pass an EICR or meet current regulations

Common Questions

Straight answers about fuseboard replacement in Liverpool.

COSTHow much does fuseboard replacement cost in Liverpool?

Fuseboard replacement in Liverpool costs from £699 for a dual RCD board, £825 for a full RCBO board and from £1,300 for an AFDD board. British Gas charges £1,600 to £1,800 for the same certified work. All our prices include supply, installation, testing and an NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificate.

LEGALAre old fuse boxes illegal in the UK?

Old fuse boxes are not technically illegal but they will not pass an EICR, which is legally required for rental properties. When selling a property, buyers increasingly request EICRs and old fuseboards frequently fail. Buyers may use a failed EICR to negotiate the price down or request an upgrade before completing the purchase.

REWIRINGCan I get a new fuse box without rewiring?

Yes, in most cases. Around 80 percent of fuseboard upgrades in Liverpool do not require rewiring. We test all circuits during installation. If your wiring is safe we connect it to the new board. If we find faults we explain them clearly and provide a separate written quote for any repairs needed. We never leave an unsafe installation.

DIYCan I replace a fuseboard myself?

No. Fuseboard replacement is notifiable work under Part P building regulations and must be carried out by a registered electrician who can issue the required Electrical Installation Certificate. DIY installation is illegal and potentially dangerous. The certificate is also required by your insurer and when selling your property.

CERTIFICATEDo I need a certificate for a new fuse box?

Yes. An Electrical Installation Certificate is legally required for fuseboard replacement. This proves the work meets BS 7671 18th Edition wiring regulations. You will need this certificate when selling your house and for any insurance claims. We include the certificate in all our fixed prices at no extra charge.

DURATIONHow long does fuseboard replacement take?

Typically 3 to 5 hours for a standard Liverpool home. Your power will be off during the installation. We always complete the work in a single visit so you are not left without power overnight. Larger properties with more circuits may take slightly longer.

SELLINGCan you sell a house with an old fuse box?

Yes, but it may affect your sale. Buyers increasingly request EICRs before completing a purchase. Old fuseboards typically fail these inspections. Many buyers then negotiate the price down or request an upgrade before exchanging contracts. A new fuseboard with a fresh certificate removes this complication and can actually speed up your sale.
