Extra alarms on the RF package are £150 per alarm when the always-on power feed can be taken from a nearby ceiling light. Extra alarms on a wired system are priced per job. The interlink cable must reach every new alarm. That keeps them working as one family. Some homes carry the permanent live at the switches, not the light fittings. That changes the RF installation. When Do Smoke Alarms Need Replacing?
Turn your smoke alarm over. There is a replace by date printed on the back. It is normally 10 years after the year it was made.
The 10 year rule
Smoke and heat alarm sensors degrade over time. After 10 years the sensor can miss a real fire or trigger false alarms. The alarm may still beep on test. That only proves the sounder works, not the sensor. Past the date on the back, the unit needs replacing.
The yellow tell
Old alarms discolour. If your smoke alarms have yellowed with age, they are almost certainly past their replace by date. We see this in homes across Liverpool every week. A yellowed alarm is a tired alarm.
Why landlords replace on time
Landlords must keep working smoke alarms on every storey. An out of date alarm is a compliance risk and shows up on inspections. Replacing all three alarms costs £270 and resets the clock for another 10 years.
What Does the Law Say About Smoke Alarms?

At least one working smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation. A carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a gas boiler or similar fixed appliance. Gas cookers are excluded. These rules were tightened in 2022. Mains interlinked alarms to BS 5839-6 Grade D are the standard we fit.
Homeowners
No law forces you to upgrade existing alarms in your own home. New builds and full rewires must have mains powered interlinked alarms under the Building Regulations. Most homeowners upgrade for one simple reason. Interlinked alarms all sound together, so an alarm in the kitchen wakes you in the bedroom.
HMO landlords: which system does your HMO need?
Your licence conditions set the exact requirement. Here is the rule of thumb. Most one and two storey shared houses need interlinked mains smoke and heat alarms. Wired Interlink or Radio Frequency: Which Is Right for Your Home?
Interlinked means every alarm sounds together. There are two ways to link them. Your house decides which one makes sense.

The honest caveat on RF pricing
The £450 package has one assumption. Each alarm needs an always-on power feed. Electricians call this the permanent live. In most homes we can take it from a nearby ceiling light. Some Liverpool homes keep this feed at the light switches instead. Then a cable must run from a switch to each alarm. The job changes and so does the price.
